Bak in early March, I hired 2 teenage girls, friends and they were supposed to coordinate so that I would have 4 days a week covered.

However, right from the get-go, one girl's other job wouldn't give her a FRI or a SAT off.

The other girl took 2 days but she could never ever manage to work more than 4-5 hours a day.  Always some excuse.  AND she refused to do ANAL glands, and she said her back always hurt, she had heavy periods, she had to shop for a prom dress and a zillion other reasons why she wasn't up to 100% effort.  She bathed dos with collars ON and used up gallons of expensive Les Pooch and Plush Puppy products. Finally she quit this past Tuesday...I knew it was coming.  She only wanted to work up to prom and then once she had enough money, I figured she was gonna quit.  So I still have the other MONDAY only girl.  I like her but when she goes off to college, I gotta start all over again.  Oh and in the meantime, I did hire another woman who lives right behind me in the trailer park.  I figured she was on unemployment and might need a little extra for her son with ADHD.  One the 1st day of work, she came in and said there was an emergency at her sons school and she had to go get him at the nurse's office....he vomited and was very sick with a fever.  So I said I understood and I'll see you in a few days when he goes back to school.  But in the meantime, I found out she told people that she showed up and I SENT HER AWAY because there was no work for her that day.  So she's never been back and I just hate people somedays.  I am so busy.  I have my husband working with me and we are a very good team....I am training him to be a full fledged groomer, not just a bather or helper.  But even when he's ready to groom, we are still in need of a bather who is strong, loves dogs and doesn't care about anals or biters and who loves the feeling of wet nylong clinging to their legs all day.

I know whatcha mean. I hired a helper told her I was expanding the area I cover (mobile) and she started trying to run my business for me by telling me that I had no reason to expand and then she wouldn't even show up on time. I put in a full day and she gets mad because she only got to clip 2 dogs ( I had already done 20) and she wanted half the take for the day.

What is up with people?

People are not hungry enough. Why work when they can stay home collect welfare, food stamps and medicaid. As far as the teenagers, my daughter bought her own car, but most of her friends had cars bought by their parents.Their parents by their expensive clothes and fast food. There are some teens  out there that will work and are responsible kids we have found a few.Kids are being spoiled now days, which is turning out young adults that would rather not have a job than do something that they feel is beneath them.Just my opinion hope it doesnt offend anyone.

Speaking of wet nylon,I have the mint grooming pants from pet edge. The other day my bather called in sick.In a hurry, when I bath ,I dont take the time to get the rubber apron. When I found out she wasn't coming, she didn't call in until 8:50,I just grabbed a dog and started bathing. After about the forth bath another employee came back to help and burst out laughing.I was wet and may as well been in just my underwear. Those pants are transparent when they are wet you could see everything skin and all.I had to hv myself before anyone else saw me.Then my employee tells me that the v neck shirt Im wearing that matches the pant gapes open when I lean over and you can see everything straight down the front.Guess I was just a walking peepshow. So if anyone buys that outfit, mint with brown trim and paw on shirt, beware.

OH my, that's too funny.   Probably not at the time, but it is now.  LOL.

I have had a time with employees.  They are either very good or deceitful as can be.

The first groomer I hired was going to go to school, but decided she couldn't so I ended up training her.  She had a problem nicking/cutting the dogs at first, but we worked on it and she was doing much better.  After a year, she was doing pretty good work, but started rushing through and cutting dogs again, but hiding it from me.  The rule at my shop is you must tell me if you injure a dog or yourself, immediately.  When I found out she was cutting dogs and not telling me, I implemented a written policy stating this rule with the penalty being loss of employment.  She never said anything to me, but complained to the other employees and was furious about it.  She signed it, but called in and quit the next work day stating she couldn't abide by the attendance policy.  I'm glad to be rid of her, although shocked at her actions after working with her nearly two years.  Found out later she had lied about a lot of things, including her past employment.  Said they had closed down, now I know to call anyway.  Geesh.

The really crazy story is of a bather I had.  She did good work when she was there, but missed a lot and always had an excuse.  She missed a day her first week, and never arranged for it.  I would just come in to a message stating she wouldn't be in today, blah, blah, blah.  And it wasn't an emergency.  I explained to her that I needed her everyday, unless an emergency of course.  So, she did good a couple days, then called in on a busy Saturday morning, crying, saying her daughter was in a bad accident with her boyfriend and they were both in a larger city in the hospital.  He had a broken leg and the whole side of his face was caved in, and she had a skull fracture, eye socket fracture, broken jaw and nose.  She didn't want to lose her job, but felt like she needed to be with her daughter.  Duh, I told her this was the emergency we talked about and told her to go.  Supposedly it happened the night before, but she didn't find out until she got a text message that morning from her daughter's friend.  I thought that odd, but what do you say at that point.  Well, she had a couple days off, and she said she could come back to work Tuesday.  During this time she's giving us so many details about their injuries and we are concerned.  I told her to make sure her daughter called her if she needed her and she could go if she needed to.  She worked Tuesday and Wednesday, then didn't show up for work on Thursday, which was odd.  she always called in.  We were getting worried that her daughter took a turn for the worse, so sent someone to check on her at the house, we tried calling her and her daughter's cell phones, but no answer.  There are lots of little details I'm leaving out, because it would be way too long of a story.  LOL.  Anyway, my husband knocks on her door, no answer, but he hears someone inside.  At that time, a little red car pulls up and a girl and guy get out, he tells them who he's looking for and the girl says that's her mom.  The guy says he'll go check on her.  Hubby asks the girl if she was in a car wreck, she says she was with her boyfriend and he wrecked the car, but she wasn't hurt at all and he just had a scratch on his cheek.  He wasn't limping either.  That "broken leg" must have healed fast.   The boyfriend came back out and told my husband that she was very sick with a high fever and couldn't talk, so that's why she didn't call in.   I tried calling her a couple more times and no answer, so I finally left a message that she didn't need to come back, we needed someone whom could work everyday.

I'm appallled that she could tell such a story about her own daughter.  That's just not right.  You just never know with people, do you?

Check your local 4-H extention for any dog 4-H clubs and if you have any call the leader and tell them you are looking for a reliable bather for your shop and see if they have anybody who is of legal working age who might be willing to start working for you. As most know, dog people are crazy, but if you can find one with desire to learn and wants to know everything about dogs then you will have the BEST worker...and usually a 4-H'er falls into that catagory....give it a try!

That was going to be my responce too Heavenly!  Sometimes you have to look from inside your own "group" to find help.  In this case its someone who already knows quite a bit about dogs and how they work...

It's funny to hear all this but I am actually at the opposite end and can't find a good decent boss to work for. I overwork myself and keep myself quiet yet I get cut alot. The people who talk alot and like drama seems to be able to stay longer than I do. Strange.

Shivering, I've had that problem at other jobs. So, I set out to find a place where I wouldn't have that problem and now I am my own boss. I groom, sharpen, engrave and make quilts.

Good luck in your job search.

This thread reminds me why I never wanted to have my own groom shop again LOL. The employees. I am hoping that now that I am no longer in a big city. I will be able to find the wholesome employees I tend to work well with. My main groomer from my old store. Has been my friend over the years. She is from Russia. Worked with me for 13 years.

Besides her finding a bather or another groomer. Was always a huge problem. I had a run on bipolars. 5 in a row. They always tell you what they are. By the 5th one. I asked her of there was a bipolar group handing out my phone number. They are ok until thier meds stop working or if they start using street drugs. One from a rescue I groomed for was so bad I wanted to throw her up against a wall. That was the longest hardest day of my life LOL. When you know someone has a problem like bipolar. You do not want to set them off.

But fidning excuses for your help. Doing their work for them. Having them lie and not come in. Having them lie about you. Being on drugs.  Having them work so bad you have to redo everything. Having them say things to your clients. Have them stealing products, equipment, checks, money. Then of cource at the end of the week they do want that pay check. and god forbid if you dock them for the lousy work. I had only 1 never show up again even for the pay check. I had quit a few steal. One found my check book and wrote himself a few pay checks after I fired him.

I am going to have to remember the 4H thing. And not get into the pattern of hiring the wrong people. That is the hardest part of owning a business. Finding the best employees. That can make you or break you.

I groom in a smaller town and have people drive from other towns around me that have groomers but I do everything myself so I don't have to hire anyone. I am busy, about 7 to 8 dogs a day by myself. (sometimes ten)I have thought about it but I remember starting as a bather the other girls my boss had hired made me so angry. So I don't even want to deal with it. I like it being just me and the dogs. They behave better, and I know EVERYTHING is being done to the best Because I'm doing it myself. I don't have to worry about getting a dirty dog because the bather didn't do it good enough. And I make plenty of money to make it expand carry more merchandise, my customers tell me I should go up in price. and no headaches.

Well we are in Toledo, Ohio and we are in the same boat. No one willing to work and it is awful. Our shop only a year old is driving our passion in to the ground when and where do you find reliable groomers and bathers??? I am in need of a bather more than not and can't seem to find any that want to stay.
