I found a listing for an RV I would like to purchase to go mobile but the title has not been registered for almost 10 years. Does anyone know how I can get a title for this vehicle? The person selling it said it was a friend of a friends and he "lost" the title. I have the vin#. It's from another state. Can I call that state to see if there were liens? I ran a carfax report on it and it states that it is not abandoned or stolen or anything. What do I do? It's a GREAT deal.

Id go to your local  DMV office  and ask thier advice before purchasing. I,m sure theres a way of doing it but its better to be save than have a vehicle you cant register

I did get a carfax history report using the Vin provided. The RV checks out and has no alerts on it.

My son bought a Camaro that did have a title but when he went to register it he found out the title was from an Inpound and not the person he had bought it from although it did have a females name on it. I guess she had been the original original owner and then it had somehow ended up in inpound.Probably got towed and it was never picked up. Anyways we went back to the person he had bought it from and it was only then that they revealed that they had never got it titled..ughhhh Big mess. We had to find the girl that was the name on the title and have her sign off on it so we could then get it registered.Luckily we was able to find her but i,m sure we where just very lucky .It hadnt been more than a few months since she had given it up to the Inpound and the people we bought it from bought it at auction...
So thinking about something that hasnt been registered in 10 years unless it hasnt been sold and re sold may not be a great idea..but like i said check with the local DMV.You have the Vin # so i,m sure they can help you out.

Yes dmv is the only source that you can trust. I have seen many things that were not on carfax when I worked at the auto dealership. The info they report is only as good as the info that they are given. The other problem is the fees to reg it after 10 years of no payment. In ca if it was not listed as a non op. You would have to pay 10 years of reg fees on top of late fees. Just the cost of that could exceed the value of the rig. Be very careful. Maybe the seller would be willing to meet at the locale dmv to ensure that you will be able to transfer the title and reg it without to much of a headache. Good luck and be careful.

Thanks all. I've decided against it. Instead, may fly to the other side of the country and get one that has already been converted, and also has a title.

Good idea Silas..that sounded like more of a headache than anything else. Whoever owns it needs to be the one dealing with that problem

You might check into buying a repo. In this economy there may be some.

I know the economy is bad for some. But I think it is a good thing. It's a good reality check. IMO people really should to live w/i their means and be less wasteful. I realize there are unexpected things that happen, like losing jobs, houses that are fallout. But I think the real problem with the economy has more to do with overextending credit. I've done everything I can to take steps in the last several years to end that dependency. And for those that were able to put some money aside, witht the price of things being lowered, now is a great time to save money on those professions who are offering less for their services. For instance, I will have the vehicle that I am purchasing hauled from another state, in a booming economy, this would cost me much more, but since times are harder, people are willing to do it for less $.

If anyone needs titling, they will title anything in the state of Maine. We have titled cars, motocycles, boats, and yes even my grooming trailer. Very inexpensive.
