So this lady brings her Husky/Shep in for nails and ears. His poor dear ears were scratched raw, full of wax and gunk. She was shocked at what came out. Now these were her exact words, I swear.
"What? I don't understand! I had his ears cleaned last year!!!"

Thats what people say when I tell them their cats are filthy and greasy...They look at me and say "well everytime I look at her she is licking herself!" I say "So you mean to tell me that if I could contort my body to be able to LICK every inch of my body, then I would never ever need a bath?
Cats do not CLEAN or GROOM themselves, they lick their butts and then proceed to spread that same saliva all over their body!" It seems to put it into perspective for people and they end up being extremely regular! hahaha

I think I know the answer to the nail trim Q...  
I was just at a yard sale today and the people's very nice yellow lab mix was hanging around helping. It had these god awful nails on it, but the white kind that you can totally see the pink quick from the white nail. So I told the people that if they brought her to my shop I would trim them for free and they said "Oh, she just had them done at the vets when she was spayed in the***(drum roll)*** SPRING" !! Oh ok never mind...

Those kind of people just don't get it. Don't you want to put your hands on your hips and say something smart....Oh of course, the spring nail trim. I'm sure they looked like bed springs if they only get trimmed once a year!

We had a newfie mix a couple months ago who looked like a black bear. His nails were about two inches long, but they grew straight out instead of curling under. In 27 years of grooming, that's the first time I've seen nails that long grow so straight. I wish I'd taken pics, because he feet truly looked like a bear with claws.
I find most people have no idea their dog's nails should be trimmed monthly. They're like, "Really, every month?"
Maybe they base everything on vaccs....yearly vaccinations, yearly grooming, yearly nail trims.....hopefully they don't start feeding them yearly!
It's bad enough on these large outdoor dogs that get groomed yearly, but we actually have a poodle who gets groomed once a year. Obviously a 10 all over. The husband picked up this time and the groomer got him to prebook his next appointment in January. Let's see if they keep it.

Being in a rural community, we do see quite a few once-a-year dogs each spring/summer. I've never heard of a once-a-year poodle though!!!
We generally get Grt Pyrs, Kuvas, St. B's, Beardeds etc. I have, however, groomed a o-a-y, outdoor-only SHIH TZU!!!!!! Did no-one explain to these people that this breed was never intended for that? I've seen farm BICHONS, farm COCKERS, farm MALTESE!!! Oh yes I have!

There's a man about a half a mile down the road from me who has a farm shih tzu. We live in some pretty wild country, tons of coyote and the occasional bear in our neighborhood. I mention to him every time I see him he needs to bring that little girl inside. He says he might. It's quite the no brainer in my opinion.
We also had a customer put her shih tzu outside for a year when she had a baby. I guess once the baby turned one year old it was safe to have a dog in the house. What are people thinking? Of course, we had to shear it down before she let it back in the house since it was matted from head to toe after being outside for a year.
Then there's the other end of the spectrum....like the little JRT mix we groom every week, she gets a bath every week, with every fourth week being a full trim. Another shih tzu we groom every two weeks, and a bichon every three and half weeks. LOL. At first she wanted every three and half weeks and only on a Tuesday. It took me a bit to explain to her that it would never work out that way. I told her we could go every four weeks on a Tuesday, but she said that would be too long between grooms.
I'd much rather see them groomed too much than just groomed once a year.

I see in the news some celeb - Jessica Simpson, I think - had her beloved little dog eaten by a cayote. It happens - we've lost two clients to it this year.
Another little gal, Musqua, was down in the lower field when a cayote grabbed her - Dad gave chase on his quad - finally caught up and had to literally wrestle the dog out of the determined cayote's mouth! Yipes!
We have a # of once/month clients, who I really don't know if they truly need a groom, but hey if that is what they want....Don't have any weekly customers though.
Wouldn't that be neat if Tuesdays could happen in the middle of the week, every third week - Hmmmmmmmmmmm.
